30/11/2012 - Articulate: The Art and Science of Speech Synthesis

CereProc is proud to be part of an innovative new exhibition featuring text-to-speech technology, Articulate: The Art and Science of Synthetic Speech. The free interactive road-show, put together by the Creative Speech Technology Network (CreST) starts on Monday December 3rd 2012 in York. It will be touring Yorkshire and Humberside until January 26th 2013.

CereProc's emotional text-to-speech voices are part of a Conversational Kiosk installation, which explores the nature of conversational emotional in a live, interactive, chatbot.

The scheme is supported by the EPSRC and ACE It features exhibits created by scientists and artists using state of the art speech technologies.

Dr Alistair Edwards, from the Department of Computer Science, University of York who leads the CreST Network explains why this exhibition is so important: "Speech-synthesis technology allows those who have lost their voice through illness or disability to communicate verbally. However, there is an urgent need for this type of technology to be more widely available and for it to be more reliable and personal.

By providing more public engagement with computer speech research using the creative and performing arts, CreST aims to help people gain more understanding of the benefits and limitations of this type of technology."
